The former Tennessee Volunteer made his mark in the Cowboys' annals with 87 catches and 980 yards - both franchise records, along with six touchdowns. Jason has been called an “emerging star” who was an invaluable performer as Tennessee’s primary target in 2002. He is regarded by many as one of the best pass catching tight ends in the game. As a rookie in 2003, he tied for 18th in the NFL among tight ends with 35 receptions. He also tied for fourth in the NFL among all rookies with 35 receptions, first among rookie tight ends. In three years of college, Jason Witten went from being a defensive end prospect to a third round draft choice. As for his receiving skills, NFL Scouts called Witten “as dangerous after the catch as any Tight End in this draft.” At 21 years of age, Witten was the youngest player on the Cowboys’ roster in 2003, having bypassed his final year of eligibility to test his wares in the pros. Jason attended Elizabethton High School (Tennessee) and was a consensus All-America selection (Prep Star, Parade, Gridiron Greats, USA Today, Blue Chip Illustrated, Street & Smith) and the USA Today Player of the Year for Tennessee as a senior. He was listed as the No. 1 prospect in Tennessee by the Knoxville News-Sentinel and the Chattanooga Times & Free Press. An All-State player his junior and senior years, Jason racked up awards for his determination and skill for play on both sides of the ball. Witten was an Arts and Sciences major at Tennessee. |
