Anthony Herrera was born in Trinidad and Tobago and is the third NFL player from the small Caribbean nation. After arriving in the United States, Herrera played high school football at Barron Collier High in Naples, Florida where he was named the Fort-Meyers News Offensive Player of the Year, District MVP, and team captain. After an intense recruiting battle, Herrera chose the University of Tennessee. Herrera spent four years at the University of Tennessee where he earned his degree in sociology and started 36 of 48 career games. Herrera helped lead the Volunteers to four straight bowl appearances and a 37-14 record for his career. Upon his graduation, Herrera signed a free agent deal with the Minnesota Vikings in 2004 where he was on the active 53-man roster for the final eight games of the year and both playoff games. By 2005 Herrera had earned a starting position at left guard and also spent some time at center to increase his versatility. After battling through a leg injury, Herrera moved to what would become his permanent home at right guard in 2007. During his first start, Herrera paved the way for Adrian Peterson to rush for 224 yards against Chicago and an NFL record 296 rushing yards just a month later against the San Diego Chargers. At the end of the year, Herrera was rewarded with a contract extension and has been a staple on the Vikings offensive line the last two years. Herrera cleared the path for Adrian Peterson to rush for 1,760 yards in 2008 and was named to USA Today’s “All-Joe Team” that honors the hardest working players in the NFL. In 2009 Herrera started 16 games and helped the Vikings offense climb to #5 in the NFL, there highest ranking in five seasons. Herrera began the 2010 season at his usual spot, right guard and wearing his usual #64 to honor his football hero growing up- former Vikings guard and Trinidad and Tobago native Randall McDaniel. Anthony Herrera was born in Trinidad and Tobago, and became a United States citizen in 2008 at a ceremony in the Twin Cities. He and his wife LaShawnda and have a son, Jayson, and a daughter, Nailah, as well as a rotweiler named Diamond. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Tennessee. Anthony has been active in the community throughout his career with the Vikings including serving as the team spokesman for the 2008 Tackle Influenza campaign. He also was a contestant on NBC’s ‘Minute to Win It’ playing to win money for the Boys and Girls Club of Collier County. Herrera’s high school alma mater, Barron Collier (Naples, FL) recently retired his jersey (No. 75) during one of their home football games. It was the first jersey that was retired in the team’s 32-year history. Anthony is also a national spokesman for Prilosec OTC. |
