Kelley Washington did not take the common route to the NFL. He has the rare distinction of playing professionally in two sports, football and baseball. The shortstop was drafted in the 10th round of the 1997 MLB draft by the Florida Marlins. He spent four years in the minor leagues before returning to college on a football scholorship. Washington had been an All-State football player in Virginia prior to his baseball career, and decided that the University of Tennessee would be the perfect opportunity for him. Washington caught 70 passes for over 1000 yards en route to Freshman All America honors in 2001. While Washington was widely considered to be a first round lock if he went to the NFL draft, he decided to return to Tennessee for a sophomore season. Washington’s sophomore campaign was limited to four games before undergoing season-ending neck surgery. Washington was selected 65th overall by the the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2003 NFL Draft. He spent three seasons with the Bengals before signing a five year contract with the New England Patriots in March of 2007, where he reunited with college teammate and roommate, Donte’ Stallworth. Washington made his mark on special teams, and was eventually re-signed by the Patriots under a new contract in 2008. The following year Washington signed a one-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens. Washington then signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in July of 2010, but was later released in September. Kelley Washington is currently a free agent and weighing NFL opportunities. On the field, Kelley Washington, nicknamed “The Future”, is a charismatic, outgoing, fun-loving player. He is widely known to break out into endzone dances that rival those of Deion Sanders, and his most notable endzone performance is “The Squirrel”. But off the field, Kelley is down to earth, quiet and enjoys spending time with his family. Kelley grew up in Winchester, Virginia and enjoys working with young athletes in his hometown. He has hosted his “Futures Football Camp” there for many years. At the camp, Kelley coaches the kids, runs plays, and guides them in drills and skill development. |
