Eric Berry hails from Fairburn, Georgia, where he was a two sport star at Creekside HIgh School. He was a two time state champion in track, and on the football field, played on both sides of the ball at quarterback and safety. He lead his team to a 37-5 record during his time there. Berry was the top rated player in Georgia during his senior season, the top rated defensive back prospect, and the #3 player in the nation by Rivals. After being invited to the U.S. Army All-American Game, Berry decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and attend the University of Tennessee. It did not take long for Berry to have an impact, as he was starting by his second collegiate game. He broke a 37 year old Tennessee record with 222 return yards on five interceptions, and led all SEC freshman in tackles. Berry was named a team captain his sophomore year, and finished the year tied for most interceptions in the country with 7. He also broke his own record for return yards on interceptions at Tennessee, and broke the all-time SEC record for return yards. After a stellar junior season, Berry declared for the NFL draft. He was taken fifth overall by the Kansas City Chiefs, the highest a safety had been taken since the late Sean Taylor. He changed his number from the 14 he wore in college to 29 to honor a collegiate teammate, Inky Johnson, whose career had been cut short by injury. Berry entered his rookie season as the starting strong safety for the Kansas City Chiefs. Team: Kansas City Chiefs |
