When people think of Archie Manning, they think football. But Archie’s appeal transcends his athletic achievements. People far and wide have been inspired by his warm personality, his drive and sense of humor. He was recently selected as one of 10 outstanding New Orleanians by Family Service of Greater New Orleans and named Hornblower of the Year by the Public Relations Society of America (New Orleans Chapter). He currently serves in public relations and consulting capacities for several local, regional and national companies. He hosts four Archie Manning Cystic Fibrosis benefit golf tournaments in Louisiana and Mississippi and is active in a wide variety of charitable and civic causes.
Archie was born May 19, 1949, in Drew, Mississippi. He attended the University of Mississippi where he was named an All-American Quarterback and is the only Ole Miss player to have his number retired. He was voted Mississippi’s Greatest All-Time Athlete in 1992, and recently named Mississippi’s Most Popular Athlete of the Century. He was elected to the 50-Year All-South Team (1940-1990), named one of the Top 25 Athletes of the Century in Louisiana and he and his son Peyton were named among the 100 All-Time Greatest College Football Players. Archie was inducted into the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame and is a member of other Halls of Fame including Louisiana and Mississippi.
In 1971, Archie was the second player chosen in the NFL draft – the number one draft choice of the New Orleans Saints. He set Saints passing records, played in two Pro Bowls and was named the NFL Most Valuable Player in 1978. He was the first player in Saints history to be inducted into the Louisiana Superdome Wall of Fame. He concluded his 15-year career in 1985. He was also drafted four times by major league baseball.
While in pro football, he received the Byron “Whizzer” White Humanitarian Award, the Bart Starr Humanitarian Award, the Spirit of Good Sports Award from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and the U.S. Jaycees named him one of 10 Outstanding Young Americans.
His community activities include Louisiana Special Olympics, the New Orleans Area Boy Scout Council, the Salvation Army, United Way Speakers Bureau, NOKIA Sugar Bowl Committee, New Orleans Sports Foundation, and National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Board of Directors.
Archie and his wife Olivia reside in New Orleans and have three sons, Cooper, Peyton and Eli.
Cooper is an institutional broker in New Orleans, and father of Archie and Olivia’s granddaughter, May and grandson, Arch. Peyton is a former All-American at Tennessee. As quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts in 2003 he was named Co- MVP in the National Football League and first team All- Pro. Eli set 47 school records as quarterback of the Ole Miss Football team and in 2003 received the Maxwell Trophy as the Outstanding Player in College Football. Eli is with the New York Giants and was the number one selection of the 2004 NFL Draft.
Archie and Peyton have written a book entitled “Manning: A Father, His Sons and A Football Legacy”. He and his boys also operate the Manning Passing Academy, a summer camp for high school quarterbacks and receivers.
“Not only was Archie entertaining and motivating, he was also personable
and eager to talk with our attendees. It is not often that a luncheon
speaker will take questions or, frankly, that an audience would even be
interested in talking following a large lunch, but our participants were
eager to ask Archie about his experiences as a professional football player,
and he gratified them with personal anecdotes and a good dose of humor.
From a meeting planner’s perspective, I found him exceptionally
easy to work with. Washington Speakers Bureau has long been a source of
outstanding speakers, and they didn’t disappoint us with Archie.
As a matter of fact, we’re looking forward to having him back with
us for our Small Business Banking Conference.”
“Archie Manning was the keynote speaker at our Annual Patron Luncheon
that involves over 1,200 of Nashville’s top business leaders. He
did a great job in putting together a message that was built around the
tenants of the Boy Scouts of America’s time-honored values while
interjecting several entertaining stories of his football career and other
life experiences. Archie Manning’s address got rave reviews from
our supporters. He’s a great speaker.”
“Archie brought to our group a real person who had real life experiences
in an industry that the majority of people are only spectators to. Archie
was able to blend his football field lessons to those on the field of
life in a manner that all of our guests were able to identify with and
hopefully walk away with an application that can be used. As a person
who schedules speakers it is always nice to have someone like Archie come
along who can put aside his “celebrity” status and show a
real person who just happened to be a high profile football player.”
“Listening to an Archie Manning speech is a great experience.
I attend many conferences year-round and I hear any number of speakers,
and Archie is an absolute stand-out. He is charming, quite funny, and
perhaps most importantly, self-effacing. Archie’s speech for our
company’s annual membership luncheon was not only informative, but infused
with humorous anecdotes from his football career as well as lessons from
his life, focused on his outstanding family. I would recommend him as
a professional speaker to anyone.”
“Of all the speakers I’ve been associated with, few speak
from the heart as clearly and with as much conviction as Archie.”
“Archie Manning has done an outstanding job for Morgan Keegan addressing
our client conferences and seminars on numerous occasions. He is an outstanding
gentleman in every way whose messages are filled with inspiration, enlightenment
and humor. His experiences growing up in the Mississippi Delta, All American
quarterback in college and all pro quarterback in the NFL have given Archie
an incredible insight that he shares with his audiences. We look forward
to having Archie again.”
“Archie Manning was a speaker for our Sales Awards Program. He
projected a winning attitude, relating the humorous and serious experiences
of his football career to today’s real life business situations.
He has a dynamic, charismatic podium presence.”
“Archie contributed to the success of two key Sports Illustrated
events recently; the NADA (National Automotive Dealer’s Association)
dinner for Ford, and Sports Illustrated’s Super Bowl weekend. His
thoughtful, insightful and articulate speeches not only added world class
value, but were able to set a tone of motivation and humor, which is quite
unique in sports marketing. The feedback from our advertisers was
enthusiastic and truly appreciative, and we plan to secure Archie’s
involvement at future SI related events.”
“Archie is an outstanding motivator…our customers and employees
alike gravitated to him as a first-class human being and friend.”
