Charles Haley is a former American Football Linebacker/Defensive End who played for the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys. After playing for James Madison University in Virginia, Charles Haley was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth round of the 1986 NFL draft. The very quick 6-foot-5, 245-pounder was used primarily as a pass rushing specialist at linebacker and occasionally at defensive end, recording 12 sacks in 16 games as a rookie. A versitile defensive player, Charles Haley began his career as a specialty outside linebacker, eventually progressing to pass-rusher and finally full-fledged defensive end. Haley has the distinction of being the only player in NFL history to have been on five Super Bowl-winning teams. To date, no other player has surpassed his good fortune. Playing for San Francisco from 1986-1991, he won a ring from Super Bowl XXIII and XXIV following the 1988 and 1989 seasons, respectively. After being traded to Dallas in the 1992 off season, Haley promptly joined another football dynasty - the Dallas Cowboys - and won three more Super Bowl rings over the next four seasons in 1992, 1993 and 1995. Haley was named the National Football Conference defensive player of the year by United Press International in 1990, when he had 16 sacks. Though injuries would eventually force retirement in 1996, Haley did briefly un-retire for the 1998 playoffs to aid his former team, the 49ers, and afterwards played another year in 1999 for them. Finally out of playing football for good, Charles Haley turned to assistant coaching, and is currently a defensive assistant for the Detroit Lions. Haley is the only player to have been on five Super Bowl champion teams, two in San Francisco and three in Dallas. He holds the Super Bowl record for most career sacks, 4 1/2. During regular season play, he recorded 100 1/2 sacks.
