Phillip Fulmer’s first decade as head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers could be classified as the best 10-year period in the school’s glorious gridiron history. He led the football team to the National Championship in 1998. He also received National Coach of the Year in 1998. In 2000, Coach Fulmer received the second annual State Farm Eddie Robinson Coach of Distinction Award. This award is given to a coach for being a role model and mentor to students and players, for being an active member of the community and for being an accomplished coach. The UT Vols have also posted 95 victories under Phillip Fulmer against just 20 losses since he was named head coach in 1992. Fulmer’s winning percentage of .826 also places him ninth all-time in Division 1-A; along side such notables as Knute Rockne, Frank Leahy, Barry Switzer, Tom Osborne and Fielding Yost. In fact, he is the only active coach in the top 15 of the all-time list. Fulmer’s efforts have been especially fruitful of late. Tennessee leads the SEC over the last five years at 52-11 in total victories.
